A Softer World is putting the salt down. |

Seasons Greetings from all of us here A Softer World. We've had quite the year, haven't we? It's been a bit of a roller coaster. But there were peaks as well as valleys. For every unwanted pregnancy there was a fortuitous tumble down the stairs, and for every human trafficking police sting operation there was an incompetent handling of the evidence! Another year has come and gone, and neither of us have ruined our lives yet. We hope you're full of high proof cheer

Dear friends <3
Life is getting crazier by the minute between work and trying to get my house set up but nevertheless (and true to fashion at the last minute...argh) I am in the process of making holiday ornaments to mail out with cards and things between now and January 6th. If you would like me to send you a ormanent please comment below with what you'd like painted on said ormanent (a character of yours with pic references, something christmassy, zombies, whatever gets you in the holiday mood) and drop me a snail mail address via LJ if I don't have it already. I can't do anything too complicated unfortunately (limited space heh) but I will most certainly adhere to your requests. Happy holidays!

2 YEARS OLD!!! |
[20 Dec 2009|06:44pm] |

Saturday was destined to be all sorts of ... wonderful? :) Last time Maryland had an official blizzard (that I lived through) was 1996. Apparently there was one in 2003 or 2004 - but I had moved to Utah. Moving foward - Brooks birthday also happened to be Saturday! Freaking 2! Holy cow - the amazingness of the past 2 years blows me away. I love this lil' kid so much, and can't believe he's a 'kid', not a baby, nor a toddler. A KID!
Mitch spent 4 hours driving (which should have been an hour round trip driving) to pick up my sister and her girlfriend & son so that they could come over for Brooks birthday (bless Mitch's soul....).
It was such a fabulous day, regardless of the weather. (Have I mentioned how much I despise snow?). I hope Brooks knows how much we love him and how grateful we are to have him in our life for 2 years now!
Brooks obviously loves all things "Yo Gabba Gabba" - his favorite character being Brobee. I knew I wanted to make a Brobee cake, but I am no cakebakewhiz. (Even though I did work in a cookie decorating store for 2 years...). I was determined to only use ingredients I had in the house - and running out of cake mix, I ended up using tinfoil for the horns - but otherwise, I think it was a success because at least you can tell what "it" was supposed to be? :)
The favorist thing I made was this pretty rad (for a non painter/talentedcreative type) was this frame... til I realized they all had their hands up like suliting Hitler... Ha... Uh..

Happy Birthday Brooks!

A Softer World is on the mend. |

It is the time of year when I get very excited about upcoming movies. Sherlock Holmes is the top of my list, because a) I really enjoyed Snatch by Guy Ritchie, and b) I am queer as a glass doorknob for that delightful Robert Downey Jr.
Also, I am actually a bit excited about seeing Avatar, which was not the case after I first saw the trailers. But the more I hear about it, the more interested I get. It's not first on the list, but it's on there. Has anyone seen it? What did you think?
(Also, A Single Man is so good, and you should see it if you can.)

Restaurant Recommendations and Shameless Self-Promotion |
[17 Dec 2009|11:21am] |
Everyone's always asking for restaurant recommendations, so I thought it appropriate to point out that one of my review lists is on the front page of Yelp Portland today. My list is titled "Culinary Adventures" and likely represents the first 5 minutes of my 15 minutes of e-fame.
Where's my book deal?

I HAVE POWARRRRR
So after a couple of weeks of watching electric company guys setting up the electrical pole, I go into my house today to get the serial number thingy from underneath the kitchen sink for the bank appraisal lady and find to my surprise every single light in my house was on and the fan was running (without the air/heating unit installed yet no less) Happy to have electricity (and slightly annoyed no one had bothered to turn everything off before yanno...LEAVING)I danced around the house merrily flipping light switches off and on. And nothing sparked or exploded! I'm so dissapointed I mean Yay! I then made sure to turn all the lights off before I left. I know they had come that morning so I'm hoping the lights hadn't been on for too long (as it's now my money and I damn well better not get that added to my first bill since I'm not even IN the freaking house yet. Oh gods I'm turning into my father. Following people around to make sure they turn off the lights, cutting back the AC and heat until I can see my breath, taking up the griper's banner in the lifelong battle against the electrical company.)
So the next steps I guess are to go up to the bank and set up a closing date, get the well tested, see about getting a heating and air unit or furnace or whatever else I need., packing stuff...ergh. So much to do...
And because this has nothing to do with anything I just posted but is weirdly adorable I give you this
PPS: Discovered first by asiaoddhours and snowkatt101 on DA this video is AMAZING and intense, omg @____@ FFFTTTTT

You are the reason that industrial-grade chemical fires were invented by Al Gore. Please let me know when you will all be available, and such a fire can be arranged for you to participate in.

Dear Women of the World |
[14 Dec 2009|06:41am] |
Notably: Beyonce, Britney, and the producers that encourage their kind of 'showmanship.'
Men do not LIKE you more if you prance around nearly naked, or even completely naked. They just want to screw you more often. If that is your concept of respect, please take your skanky half naked ass to another planet and infect them with your brand of mental disease and let the women on this planet regain their self respect.
Thank you.
Me.

Writer's Block: Voulez-vous parler ... |
[12 Dec 2009|08:19pm] |
I can honestly say I currently 'speak' English and ASL. I would like to relearn Spanish, and Irish/Gaelic so when I go back to ireland and when I visit Spain, I will be comfortable speaking with the natives.

I wish LJ was all the rage still. I used to check it 395893 times a day, and there would be new posts. I check it once a day now, and there MIGHT be new posts. It makes me sad. If you know of active users - tell me. I don't update mine (hence probably everyone else too in LJ land....). I just like LJ because it's all in one spot, where blogs you have to click on each blog... boo. I changed my default icon - so thats pretty much the only reason I am updating my LJ. www.iamblair.com or bust.

Working from a Comfy Chair |
[10 Dec 2009|09:46am] |
I've got jury duty today. For those of you following my twitter (http://www.twitter.com/winter_in_asia/), I'm live-blogging the whole thing.
In spite of my situation, I'm getting a lot of work done. The Multnomah County jury room has wireless and a bunch of plugs. The chairs are also quite comfy -- cushy faux-leather jobs with springy bases and nice arms. I'm probably going to walk down and see what kind of vending machines they have.
The day started out with a short Civics lecture from a circuit court judge. I suppose I can't blame him for talking like he was visiting an 8th grade classroom. After that, we got a video about how important it was for us to do this. At least I'm doing something important ("People have died for everyone to have this right!") by sitting trapped in a cold room with a bunch of strangers reading People magazine.
CNN is playing on the TV and I'm answering phone calls while I screen share with my home computer.
